The Living Heritage – Building Bridges with Art

13th November 2016, Empires Hotel, Bhubaneshwar

In collaboration with Raghurajpur International Art and Culture Exchange (RIACE), IPCA brought together international, national and folk artists in a unique effort entitled – The Living Heritage: Building Bridges with Art, an interactive event highlighting the experience of artists engaged with traditional forms as they interacted, lived and worked together in an indigenous setting like the famed art village of Raghurajpur in Puri district of Odisha.

The programme held on 13th November 2016 at Bhubaneshwar presented the work and experience of ten international artists in residency, in dialogue with contemporary emerging artists as well eminent achievers alongside practicing folk artists and patrons. This interaction facilitated establishing a global network between a varied cross-section of the art fraternity - from practitioners, scholars and patrons to craftspersons, art lovers and collectors.

The event was a culmination of a five weeks long international residency program where ten artists from different countries worked closely and collaborated with artisans of Odisha. During the residency, folk/traditional artists of Odisha taught methods and styles of traditional practices such as cow dung toys, patachitra paintings, palm leaf carvings etcetera to contemporary artists and vice versa.

To make the occasion more meaningful and substantive, IPCA and RIACE honoured eminent artists of our country during the event - Smt. Lalitha Lajmi, Shri R. Bhaskaran, Shri Karl Antao, Shri Amol Palekar, Shri Rajendra Patil along with folk artists who are the penultimate practitioners of their craft - Smt Sashimani Maharana, cow dung toy maker of Raghurajpur and Smt. Laxmi Sabar, Saura artist from Putasingh, Rayagada.
